PayPal Nonprofits: A Greener Way to Fundraise

Black Warrior Riverkeeper was founded in 2001 to help protect and restore the Black Warrior River and its tributaries in Alabama, America’s leading state for freshwater biodiversity. The citizen-based nonprofit organization is dedicated to improving water quality, habitat, recreation, and public health throughout the Black Warrior River watershed.

Director of development Charles Scribner appreciates that PayPal helps the organization stay true to its mission by allowing it to conduct green fundraising online. "By accepting PayPal through our website and MySpace page, we've achieved postage-free, paper-free fundraising," says Scribner. "We're spending less on direct mail and postage while encouraging our supporters to participate with us online."

Scribner also highlights the fact that as a grassroots, citizen-based organization, Black Warrior Riverkeeper aims to communicate directly with its citizen base, a goal supported by PayPal. "Individual members contribute 75 percent of our funding," he says. "With PayPal and online donations, we constantly expand our grassroots support base."

PayPal for Nonprofits is the fundraising vehicle of choice for cause-related organizations small and large, and supports their worthy efforts through discounts for registered nonprofits.

In 2008, more than 100,000 organizations used PayPal to raise over $850 million. In partnership with Blackbaud, PayPal is helping new and growing nonprofits reach their fundraising goals with a point-and-click website builder, BlackbaudNow, with secure donation processing and the ability to send emails and record donors' giving histories.

And when, in late 2008, PayPal and eBay teamed up to offer eBay customers the ability to donate a dollar at checkout, $1 million dollars was donated to a variety of nonprofits in just the first three months.

Millions of people around the world know that PayPal is the faster, safer way to pay. It’s also better for the planet. PayPal’s balance-funded payments are transacted as transfer of funds between PayPal account holders, which means fewer greenhouse gas emissions than similar transactions made through traditional banking and credit card payments.
