The eBay Box Debuts, Encouraging eBay Sellers to Ship it Forward

Made of 100 percent recycled materials, the eBay Box is a culmination of innovation, imagination and care for the environment.
“It’s not the destination but the journey that counts.” This oft-quoted adage could have been written for the eBay Box, which made its debut on Sept. 1 at eBay: On Location in San Jose, Calif.
Introduced by the eBay Green Team, which aims to “inspire the world to buy, sell and think green every day,” the eBay Box is designed to be reused at least five times. Made of 100 percent FSC-certified and recycled materials, adorned only with water-based inks, and designed for minimal taping requirements, the boxes are durable enough for multiple uses. Starting in October, 100,000 boxes will embark on their U.S.-based pilot run.
The eBay Box – which will be manufactured in three sizes – is a product of both innovation and environmental consciousness. Every spring, eBay hosts an Innovation Expo, inviting employees from every department to invent new products and ideas that benefit buyers and sellers. This year, more than 250 employees on nearly 80 teams competed for prizes, and the eBay Box topped the roster of innovative ideas.
“By our calculations, if every box gets reused at least five times, we could protect nearly 4,000 trees, save 2.4 million gallons of water and conserve enough energy to power 49 homes for a year,” the eBay Green Team reports. “We’ve also left plenty of space on the boxes for everyone who receives a box to write a personal message to the next person in the chain, giving every box a life of its very own. The history of each box can also be tracked through a virtual community where buyers and sellers can connect online.”
The story of the eBay Box has attracted attention from many media outlets including these:
· “eBay is perhaps the ultimate online destination for used goods, so it only makes sense that the site is taking its hand-me-down sensibilities a step further with The eBay Box…” – Fast Company
· “[The eBay Box] is designed to be reused, sent from eBay sellers to buyers, and then sent further along, until the end of its useful life – Reuters
· “Online retailer eBay will soon be giving away 100,000 eco-friendly shipping boxes, each designed to be used repeatedly as it journeys from sellers to buyers and back.” – USA Today
Sellers interested in obtaining boxes can stay tuned to the eBay Box site, where the public launch of the eBay Box program will be announced in October. For a limited time, buyers in the U.S. who receive an eBay Box will also be eligible for $1 in eBay Bucks, simply by helping to track the journeys that their boxes take.
