eBay Inc. Enables Over $10 Million For Sandy Relief
By: eBay Inc. Editors
In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy’s devastating impact, eBay Inc. is coordinating a companywide effort to support the massive community relief and recovery efforts under way. As a result, StubHub, eBay and PayPal have led company efforts enabling over $10 million of support so far to Sandy relief.
One of the things we’re most excited about is our support of the Robin Hood Relief Fund and its 12.12.12: The Concert for Sandy Relief. Here’s what we’re doing:
- StubHub is donating all profits from the resale of Sandy Relief concert tickets – an estimated $820,000 so far – and is encouraging concert ticket sellers to donate all or a portion of their sales. A StubHub home page promotion also encourages everyone to make a donation to the Robin Hood Relief Fund.
- Throughout the concert, PayPal is enabling donations to The Robin Hood Foundation through its Twitter-based payments partner Chirpify.
- PayPal is also featuring the Relief Fund on its PayPal Sandy appeal, and is giving back all fees for funds raised around 12.12.12.
- eBay Giving Works is encouraging buyers to contribute to the Robin Hood Relief Fund through its Sandy relief appeal.
Making it easy to give before, during and after the Sandy Relief concert is just one way we are supporting relief efforts. Since Sandy hit, more than 210,000 eBay and PayPal users have donated nearly $1 million to nonprofit organizations through our platforms. And almost 7,000 eBay sellers have listed more than 85,000 items with 10 percent to 100 percent of the final sale donated to a Sandy relief organization.
By using PayPal on their donation sites, 12 nonprofit Sandy relief organizations have raised more than $7.2 million, with almost $900,000 donated via mobile. PayPal has credited transaction fees to those organizations.
Partner organization Indiegogo is using PayPal to power 161 individual Sandy relief campaigns, raising more than $915,000 so far. Some influential PayPal users, including some artistically-inclined creatives, even asked their friends and followers to donate to their individual PayPal accounts for same-day collecting and delivering to devastated areas. PayPal also supported MTV’s Restore the Shore telethon that raised funds for Architecture for Humanity.
In addition, eBay-owned Magento donated a license of its Enterprise eCommerce software to HealHoboken.org, a campaign by the New Jersey Tech Meetup community that has raised almost $30,000 to date to help rebuild the city of Hoboken, NJ.
The eBay Foundation also donated $50,000 – $25,000 each to the Food Bank for New York City and the American Red Cross Greater New York Region, two New York-based organizations working to serve the hardest hit areas of the city.
Given the magnitude of the need, we’re pleased to use the power of our platforms and capabilities to connect people with ways to help. We hope you’ll consider making a donation through one of these opportunities.
