eBay Inc-ers Catch Movember Fever
By: eBay Inc. Staff
Some of you may have noticed more men sporting random wacky mustaches last month. Rest assured: there was good reason.
The men were getting hirsute for the mustache-growing charity event Movember. Begun as a funny, beer-induced bet between 30 Australian men, the stunt has grown into a true global phenomenon, whereby thousands of men from around the world grow out their facial hair with pride while raising money for prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.
Naturally, the men (and women) of eBay Inc. wanted to become “Mo’ Bros” and “Mo’ Sistas” and join the fun — and giving. (Ladies could participate by visiting the Movember website and donating to their favorite mustached man or favorite team of mustached men.) By the end of the month, we had over 360 colleagues from eBay, GSI, PayPal, StubHub, Classifieds and more all pitching in and sharing their “Sherlocks” with the world to raise a few hairs and a few funds for the Movember cause. Interestingly enough, Mo’ Sistas made up a majority of the eBay Inc. team captains and two-thirds of all the donors.
So how did we do? One week after the official deadline and end of Movember, our eBay Inc. teams surpassed the 40.000 EUR (~$50,000) mark! Out of the 10 teams, ‘eBay, PayPal and StubHub Ireland’ were the unchallenged fundraising leaders and our overall eBay Inc. Network finished 48th on the multinational rankings! The teams and individuals used their creativity and social media skills to raise funds and awareness, but also used a few more conventional but clearly effective ways, such as selling baked goods and using 50/50 raffles to grab the attention of those who are not aware of the Movember cause.
With the huge success of eBay Inc.’s 2012 Movember efforts, rest assured we will be back in 2013. Bigger, better, bushier!
