San Jose, Calif. — Oct. 21, 2010 — eBay [NASDAQ: EBAY] today announced that Neal Sample has joined the company as vice president of architecture for eBay Marketplaces. In this role, Sample will lead platform architecture strategy for the company, managing the design and delivery of eBay’s platform efforts and further integrating eBay’s range of components – including eBay mobile, Open eBay developer program, cloud computing and social commerce – into the eBay.com platform infrastructure.
“Neal brings a tremendous amount of industry expertise and a passion for supporting eBay’s mission to connect buyers and sellers,” said Mark Carges, senior vice president and chief technology officer at eBay. “His strategic thinking and ability to drive continued advancements across eBay’s immense platform and properties will be integral as we transform our technology foundation and take shopping and selling on eBay to exciting new levels with next-generation systems and technologies.”
With 200 million daily live listings, 75 billion database calls per day and a commercial data warehouse 100 times larger than the Library of Congress, eBay is the world’s largest online marketplace. Sample will not only strengthen eBay’s position as a leading technology company, but also architect and deploy advanced systems and tools for the immediate and long-term growth and strength of the eBay platform.
“I’m a scientist at heart, and bringing structure to complex operations and massive data challenges has been a career-long fascination,” said Sample. “The scale of the eBay platform and the power of the team I’m joining combine into an incredible opportunity to progress exciting ideas into sophisticated solutions that ultimately benefit the world’s largest concentration of active shopping and selling enthusiasts.”
Sample’s 17-year career spans some of the most innovative technology companies and organizations. Neal joined eBay from Yahoo!, where he spent six years as chief architect, most recently as vice president of Yahoo’s open, social and participation (YOS) platforms. Prior to that, Sample spent four years as chief scientist at RightOrder, Inc., building a data warehousing solution to accelerate queries in Oracle.
