Evolution of the CFO: Silicon Valley Business Journal Honors Bob Swan

The Silicon Valley Business Journal has honored Bob Swan, eBay Inc. ’s Senior Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer, in the publication’s annual CFO of the Year Awards. Swan, who joined eBay Inc. seven years and has helped lead the company from being a $6 billion business to one that generates $14.1 billion in annual revenue, was singled out in the public company ($500+ million) category.
The position of CFO, the SVBJ notes, is a role that has drastically changed of late, given the emergence of new accounting rules, economic crises, the Affordable Care Act and more.
“I think in the early stages of my career, being a CFO was all about counting the beans,” Swan told the SVBJ. “The role today, simply put, is to help grow the beans. It’s gone from a bean counter to a bean nurturer.”
From a more holistic perspective, Swan says his biggest challenge has been figuring out how to evolve a very successful business from its first decade and position it for success in its second decade. “We went from a startup to an extremely successful business,” he said. “So I had to figure out how to take a very successful business from its first decade and position it for success in decade two.”
