Visualizing Impact: eBay Inc. and the Global Response to Typhoon Haiyan

At eBay Inc., we foster connections between people and charitable organizations that inspire new and enduring forms of support for causes around the world. Last November, Typhoon Haiyan hit the Phillippines and left a path of tragedy and destruction in its wake. We launched a fundraising campaign and used PayPal and eBay giving programs to enable our global community to take action. The response was powerful; people around the world came together to raise over $23 million in the first 30 days after the storm. To capture the collective power of these individual acts of kindness, we built the above visualization. Through the process we uncovered some interesting stories:

  • In the month following the storm, 563,622 donations were made from 162 different countries.
  • Individual donations ranged from $0.01 to $20,000.
  • Over 80% of the $23 million was raised in the first 10 days.
  • The Philippines emerged as one of the top donating countries -- the top five in order (both by number of donations and total raised) were the UK, US, Canada, Philippines and Australpaia.
