eBay launches first ever Asian Exporters’ Index.

SHANGHAI, August 31, 2011 –eBay’s Asian exporters are experiencing a 26% jump in annual sales across the region, according to a report released by eBay today. The Asian Exporters’ Index found this increase was posted by large Asian exporters with an annual turnover of more than US $100,000.

200 of these exporters – mostly based in China and Hong Kong – recorded annual turnovers in excess of US $1 million.  The Asian exporter with the largest turnover on eBay is based in Hong Kong and had annual sales over US $21.7 million

Jay Lee, Managing Director, eBay Asia Pacific said eBay’s global marketplace provides an ideal store front for Asian exporters seeking to attract customers among the 97 million active eBay users around the world.

“The Asian Exporters’ Index demonstrates the important role eBay plays in the development of ecommerce in Asia, providing a source of job and wealth creation,”said Mr Lee.

According to the Index large Chinese and Hong Kong sellers derive 71% of their total sales from eBay, they employ an average of 10 people and expect to grow staff by a further six people in the next year.

Jeff Liao, CEO of eBay Greater China & Asian cross-border trade, said that increasing numbers of Asian brands and manufacturers are partnering with eBay to build global businesses. “eBay enables savvy brands and manufacturers to market directly to consumers around the globe. Combine that with Asia’s status as the world’s manufacturing engine room and you have a powerful opportunity to create a very efficient market connecting consumers directly to the source.”

While Asian exporters primarily sell on eBay’s US, UK, Australian and German websites, buyers are truly global with purchases from Brazil and Russia among the fastest growing.

The largest categories in which Asian exporters sell on eBay include:

  1. Clothing and accessories
  2. Jewelry, gems, watches
  3. Photo
  4. Computers
  5. Cell phones and accessories

Mr Lee also noted the growing importance of mobile technology. “eBay mobile applications for various mobile devices have been downloaded over 45 million times – putting Asian exporters’ storefronts in the pockets of millions of consumers.”
