Barcelona, June 5th, 2025 - Exporting is no longer the domain of large multinationals. This is the main conclusion of eBay’s report Spanish Small Business Exports. Based on transaction data from eBay’s marketplace in 2022, it highlights how Spanish SMEs are harnessing digitalization to access global markets, overcoming the traditional limitations faced by conventional businesses.Other notable results from the report include:

Mass exportation: 99% of Spanish small businesses on eBay are exporters, reaching an average of 25 international markets, a figure significantly higher than the 4.8% of traditional companies in Spain.

New entrants: one-third of small businesses on eBay Spain are new entrants, indicating a growing adoption of e-commerce among SMEs.

Business resilience: SMEs selling on eBay demonstrate greater stability in times of crisis, with a significantly higher export continuity rate than traditional businesses.

Global reach and digitalization: these SMEs have collectively exported to 203 countries and territories, exceeding the reach of many large multinational corporations.
"This report confirms something we at eBay see every day: that digitalization is a direct gateway to internationalization for thousands of Spanish small businesses. 99% of the SMEs active on our platform export, and many do so to more than 20 markets worldwide. A few years ago, that was only within reach of large companies. Today, any SME from Valencia, Bilbao, or Seville can sell to customers in Australia, Canada or Japan with the same ease as they would in their own city”, states Lorna Dunne, Head of EU Central Markets at eBay.

Spanish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on eBay are successfully reaching global markets with a diverse range of products—including car parts, home and garden goods, toys and games, jewelry, and collectibles. By leveraging the platform, these businesses simplify the export process and expand their international presence far beyond traditional patterns: while conventional exporters typically focus on two or three countries, Spanish SMEs on eBay reach customers in an average of 21 international markets, naturally connecting with buyers in destinations like the U.K., Germany, Italy, and beyond. This broad global reach is a key driver of economic resilience and long-term growth.
Impact on the Spanish economy & eBay Export Summit
Micro-enterprises and SMEs make up 99% of Spain’s business landscape, accounting for 72% of employment and 61% of added value. Despite their crucial role in the economy, many of these businesses still face significant challenges when it comes to digitalization and accessing international markets.
These issues—along with the ways eBay is helping to overcome them through digital tools and export support—were central themes at the company’s Export Summit, held yesterday in Barcelona. The event brought together 110 Spanish sellers and partners to explore cross-border trade opportunities, exchange best practices, and share success stories that reflect the findings of the Spanish Small Business Exports report. The summit also offered a valuable space for direct dialogue with the SME community, reinforcing eBay’s ongoing commitment to helping Spanish small businesses grow globally.
