Our 2023 Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Report

Our differences aren't obstacles — they’re stepping stones to creativity and innovation.
Beric Alleyne, eBay’s Global Head of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

I welcome you to our eighth Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Report, amid a year shaped by meaningful progress despite complex geopolitical dynamics that have influenced the global discourse on DE&I. This report stands not only as a reflection of our journey, but as a testament to our collective aspiration and unwavering commitment to be a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable organization.

At our core lies the unshakeable belief to "Be for Everyone." This ethos is deeply embedded in our DNA, guiding us as we cultivate an environment where DE&I are not just stated principles, but the heart of how we operate — within our teams, across our marketplace, and through our engagement with communities across the globe.

In 2023, we introduced and revitalized infrastructure, programs, processes, and policies aimed at ensuring every member of our eBay community feels an authentic sense of belonging. For instance, we launched our first-ever Inclusion Index, a powerful tool that allows us to better identify both our strengths and opportunities to determine what we can do better.

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked important discussions regarding the crucial role of equity in technology. As such, we have taken proactive steps to help meet these challenges head on by appointing our first Head of Responsible AI (RAI), who has formed a company-wide RAI governance structure that incorporates our Office of Responsible AI and RAI Steering Committee. These initiatives are designed to integrate an inclusive mindset and ethical considerations in our AI development, ensuring our tools serve everyone fairly.

Reflecting on the past year, we recognize the strides we've made and the ground we still have to cover. Our journey toward becoming a richly diverse, truly equitable, and fearlessly inclusive organization continues with renewed vigor. We are dedicated to being for everyone, and leveraging every lesson learned and success achieved as stepping stones toward the future.
