The partnership marks the launch of exclusive celebrity charity auctions to raise funds for social justice. Bid on one-of-a-kind items from Roxane Gay, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Leon Bridges, Betsey Johnson and more with all proceeds benefiting the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.

The Strategist, New York Magazine’s online shopping site, and eBay, one of the world’s largest and most vibrant marketplaces, have teamed up to launch “The Strategist x eBay: What I Can Live Without,” a series of charity auctions where personalities and tastemakers will give up some of their favorite things, with all proceeds going to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF). The new charity campaign is a twist on the Strategist’s popular interview series What I Can’t Live Without, which lets readers see what notable celebrities, tastemakers and personalities add to their online shopping carts on a regular basis, leveraging the power of both platforms for people who want to shop with a purpose.

Supporting Our Communities: “What I Can Live Without” x eBay

All proceeds of these auctions will benefit the LDF, which fights for racial justice through litigation, advocacy and public education. Building on its efforts to support organizations taking action against systemic racism and injustice, eBay will match $1 for $1 the funds raised.

Together with 20 “What I Can Live Without” partners: Leon Bridges, Phoebe Bridgers, Tommy Chong, Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba, Sandra “Pepa” Denton, Roxane Gay, Nicky Hilton, Cheryl “Salt” James, Erika Jayne, Betsey Johnson, Joji, Hari Nef, Todd Oldham, Suze Orman, Thakoon Panichgul, Julius Randle, Denise Richards, Debby Ryan, Saweetie and Catherine Zeta-Jones, readers can discover what celebrities can live without for a cause at Nymag.com/Strategist and bid on eBay.com/Strategist through Aug. 19.

Special auctions include:

  • Hari Nef's Gucci gown she wore to the 2017 LACMA Art + Film Gala (starting bid $250)
  • A never-produced Betsey Johnson wedding dress designed by Johnson (starting bid $50)
  • A limited-edition, signed Salt-N-Pepa snowboard donated by Sandra "Pepa" Denton (starting at $1)
  • A pair of 22k gold sunglasses co-designed by Leon Bridges (starting price $95). (Each auction runs for 10-days)

"For years, the Strategist and its readers have loved to learn about the everyday things that famous people can't live without,” says Strategist editor Alexis Swerdloff. “This year, to support a timely and important cause, we decided to flip the script and ask some of our favorite celebrities about the not-so-everyday things they can live without, and would be willing to auction off for charity. We teamed up with eBay to create a special auction event, which features prized possessions from a mix of Oscar (and Emmy and Grammy and Tony) winners, athletes, fashion designers, and more, with all proceeds going to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc (LDF) — and eBay is matching every dollar earned."

“At a time when many people are spending more time at home and shopping more online, “The Strategist x eBay: What I Can Live Without” provides the escapist fun of discovering items that celebrities are willing to part with for a significant cause,” says Sam Bright, Vice President, General Manager of Verticals, eBay North America. “At eBay, we’re proud to connect a vibrant community of buyers and sellers who are passionate about shopping with purpose.”
