eBay predicts record breaking mobile shopping day; launches new Gift Finder Tool

Press Release

Gifts to be purchased at a rate of 8 per second on mobile devices between 9pm and 9.15pm ‘eBay Gift Finder’ helps shoppers find the perfect gifts this Christmas

Sydney, Australia – 11 December 2017 Australia’s largest online shopping destination, eBay.com.au is forecasting that Monday 11 December will set new records for mobile shopping across the country. On this day more than 2.7 million people will visit eBay.com.au, with 1.8 million users visiting through mobile devices. eBay predicts gifts to be purchased via mobile at a rate of 3 per second compared to 5 per second across the entire site.

Historically, Australia’s busiest online shopping day has seen peak desktop purchasing in the evening, but in a first, Monday 11 December will see a change in shopper behaviour as desktop sales peak between 1pm and 2pm. On mobile, sales will peak between 9pm and 10pm, with the 15 minutes between 9pm and 9.15pm expected to see the highest velocity of online purchasing ever on eBay in Australia. During this time, on mobile devices alone, 8 items will be purchased per second.

On December 11, amid the entry of overseas players, fiercely loyal Australians will pledge their allegiance to local sellers. Over half of the items purchased on eBay’s busiest shopping day (56 per cent) will be from local sellers.

A breakdown of the most active shoppers reveals that regional areas are batting above average this busiest online shopping day, with Toowoomba QLD, Werribee VIC, Liverpool NSW, Mackay QLD and Truganina VIC the top postcodes across the nation.

eBay announces voice-assisted Gift Finder, eBay Gift Finder

Available today, eBay announces a new inspiring way for Australians to find the perfect gift, eBay’s ‘Gift Finder’. Shoppers will now be able to use Google Assistant to sort through curated items to narrow down a gift that suits their friends and families taste and personality.

By simply saying “Hey Google, ask eBay to find a gift”, the eBay Gift Finder will ask a series of fun questions to understand the gift recipient, and recommend the best products for them. The technology will identify traits such as favourite cities, preferred style of entertainment, and ideal holidays to narrow gift options for hard-to-buy-for friends and family members. Additionally, a new ‘I want to buy’ function has been added, allowing Aussie shoppers to find specific products on eBay.

Gavin Dennis, eBay’s Chief Financial Officer and Head of Retail Insights said “Australians are leading the way when it comes to mobile shopping globally and with 70 per cent of all traffic on eBay coming from a mobile, it’s no surprise that this year’s busiest online shopping day will break mobile records. We know inspiration can come from anywhere, at any time, so we’ve partnered with Google to open up new and intuitive ways to search and shop.

“eBay has a long-standing history as an innovator in Australia, continually looking for ways to enhance the customer experience. eBay was the first marketplace to offer voice assisted shopping, and the expansion of our partnership with Google to create eBay Gift Finder shows the remarkable power of this technology for the retail landscape,” explains Mr Dennis.

“We are launching the eBay Gift Finder today, because we know there’s always that one person who is difficult to buy for and we want to simplify the process, helping people when they don’t know where to start.”

Marking its 18th year in Australia this year, eBay is a retail powerhouse that now boasts more than 40,000 Australian businesses and over 11 million unique Aussie visitors every month. So far in 2017, more than 239 million hours have been spent browsing, searching comparing and purchasing products on eBay.com.au.

To celebrate Australia’s busiest online shopping day eBay will offer a great range of deals across the hottest categories including electronics, liquor, fashion and toys. All deals come with eBay’s price match ‘Best Price Promise’: https://www.ebay.com.au/deals?_trkparms=%26clkid%3D189819094519646748
