eBay predicts Valentine's drops, Michael Jordan's birthday & NBA All Star Weekend will send sneaker market into a February Frenzy

Press Release

As searches soar, now is the time to list your sneakers with 2.5% seller fees

14 February 2022, London:  New data released today by eBay UK reveals the impact of hyped sneaker drops on the wider resale market. Upcoming drops of the Air Jordan 1 Mid Valentine’s Day, amongst others, are set to catalyse the demand for sneakers more widely.

Searches for ‘sneakers’ are up 927% so far in February compared to last year, with Valentine’s Day, NBA icon Michael Jordan’s birthday (17 Feb)  and NBA All-Star weekend (20 Feb)  triggering sneakerheads to grab a new pair for themselves or a loved one.

When big sneakers dropped in 2021, searches on eBay boomed in the next four days. From 427% more searches following the release of Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 v2 Bred, to a huge 962% more searches when Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 v2 MX Rock landed and as many as 1847% more for Air Jordan 11 Cool Grey - the trend is confirmed..**

As Air Jordan 1 Mid Valentine’s Day, New Balance x Aimé Leon Dore 993 and Air Jordan 5 Racer Blue are amongst the biggest sneaker drops set to land this month, eBay predicts that now is the prime time for sneakerheads to sell their sneakers and fund their new drops.

To help sneakerheads get trading on their latest kicks, eBay is lowering seller fees to just 2.5% on all sneakers, regardless of their selling price  for a limited time only - Monday 14th until 21st February 2022.

eBay UK’s very own sneakerhead, Wahaaj Shabbir, Sneaker Category Manager has said: “Sneakerheads come to eBay to buy and sell exclusive sneaker drops that are hard to get your hands on. We see it every time - when a sneaker legend like Michael Jordan is front of mind, and it’s the run up to NBA All Star weekend, we see mass market movement. With so much heat setting to land in February, now is the time to list your sneakers with so many buyers looking on site and then you can set your sights on your next dunks, ”.

Eight tips for selling from eBay’s Sneaker Category Manager, Wahaaj Shabbir:

  1. Key words are key - Take the time to get your keywords right and bidders will come. When buyers search, eBay.co.uk automatically filters the listing titles, so it's crucial to write your listing in your fellow users’ language and use the terminology they search for - especially brand and product names.

  2. Pictures are important - Most users will not bid on items they cannot see. For best results, take photos in natural light against a neutral background and be honest about any scratches or aesthetic damage to the item.

  3. Be as detailed as possible- Be honest about the condition of the product and be sure to note any wear and tear. By including details that can’t be seen in the image, for example if you are selling clothes noting the feel or fit of the product, you’ll help buyers decide if this is the item for them.

  4. Look at past sold items- eBay.co.uk has a function that allows you to search for the item you want to sell and then filter the results by sold items. Here, you can view the price the item has sold for and get insight into how others have listed it.

  5. Be realistic with pricing- consider your pricing strategy carefully following the eBay pricing recommendations. Try searching for similar items on eBay, to make sure you’re going for the right price and always ask yourself ‘would I pay this price for this item?

  6. Selling Sundays - eBay’s busiest time for buyers is Sunday evenings so schedule your listings to end around that time and choose 10-day auctions to ensure the maximum number of bids. The longer your item is listed, the more chance of people seeing it, so unless it's time-sensitive, pick 10 days.
