eBay’s Halloween Costume Sales Reveal Trends for Humans and Pets

The data is in at eBay, and surprise winners among costumes include Minions and Superman getups for pets.

Halloween is only days away, and data from eBay is already providing an inside track on the hottest costumes. The top outfits this time around are not just for humans, either.  Costumes for pets are doing brisk business.

Halloween costumes, of course, often mirror societal trends.  As reported on the eBay for Business blog, more than 165 million people plan to celebrate Halloween this year, with the average person spending over $75 on décor, costumes, and candy. Costumes are already in demand. TODAY.com recently analyzed data from ecommerce companies including eBay, and noted that with the highly anticipated upcoming release of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens,’ Star Wars-themed costumes remain popular this year.

Indeed, Darth Vader and Princess Leia costumes earned Honorable Mentions in the analysis of eBay’s Halloween costume data provided below, but the eBay data revealed several much hotter trends. eBay’s top 10 list of costumes for humans includes characters from Frozen and Star Wars. Super hero outfits are also popular this year and Power Rangers remain in vogue.

“At eBay, we’re always looking to see how our data can help predict the trends that consumers are most interested in at any given time,” said eBay’s Vice President of Customer Optimization and Data, Zoher Karu. “Around Halloween, we’ve historically seen a nod to superheroes and pop culture moments. With the upcoming Star Wars films, it was no surprise that we’ll see lots of Han Solo’s out on Halloween. But, we’re also seeing classic duos like Mario & Luigi and Minnie & Mickey stand the test of time.”

Among top costumes for pets, culled from eBay’s data, are Superman and Panda getups.
